Jeanie Bakker, LPC
I know that it takes courage for a person to make that initial phone call asking for help. When a person first comes in for counseling, I ask, “What is it that brings you here? What are the problems for which you seek help?” Slowly, and with compassion, a person’s life stories are told and together the client and I unravel the problems that brought them in for counseling. Then we work on finding solutions to the problems, so that the person can live a happy and fulfilled life. I enjoy working with children, adolescents, and adults. My training qualifies me to treat mental health issues using individual, couples and family therapy, as well as play therapy for children. I help individuals and families learn how to manage emotions like anger, fear or sadness, so that relationships can be healthy and fulfilling. I use a client-centered and strengths-based approach as a counselor, which means that the client determines the direction of the therapy session and the focus is helping the client feel better and manage his or her life more successfully.
I completed my Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology at George Fox University in Portland, OR in 2005. Since that time, I have successfully worked in Oregon and Idaho as a counselor treating individuals and families dealing with trauma, depression, anxiety, grief & loss, bipolar disorders and schizophrenia.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy(CBT) is an approach I use to help a person change his or her self-defeating thoughts and behavior. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy(DBT) is the method that I use to help a person stop dwelling on the past, whether it is because of sadness or anger. This approach works well for fear and anxiety about the future, helping a person to enjoy life and his or her relationships. After I received my license to practice as a counselor (LPC) in the State of Idaho, I joined Journey Mental Health Nampa because of this agency’s integrity and compassion towards each client seeking services.
